Description
A ball cork is a quarter-turn valve that starts and stops water in a pipe line. Turn the handle a quarter turn and the line closes. Turn it back and flow returns at full bore. Eunidrip stocks this UPVC body in three end types and eight sizes, from 20 mm to 90 mm, priced from KES 100.
Farm plumbers in Kenya call it a ball cork. Trade catalogues call it a ball valve.
What a Ball Cork Does on a Farm Line
Every water system needs cut-off points. A pump can run, a tank can fill and a filter can be cleaned, but only if you can stop the flow upstream. That control is the whole job of this valve.
Inside the body sits a bored ball. When the handle lies along the pipe, the bore lines up and water passes through. Therefore the valve loses almost no pressure when it is open. When the handle sits across the pipe, the bore turns away and the seat seals. Because the movement is a quarter turn, the valve is either fully open or fully shut.
For this reason we do not sell it as a flow adjuster. Part-closing a ball valve forces water past the seat at speed, and the seat wears. Use it to isolate, then adjust flow at a drip valve or a rain hose valve instead.
Ball Cork Sizes and Prices in Kenya
Prices track size, and the end type moves them again. The table below lists what we charge in the shop today, in Kenya shillings per piece.
| Size | Threaded | Plain | Complete |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20 mm (3/4 inch) | 100 | 120 | 350 |
| 25 mm | 150 | 180 | 450 |
| 32 mm | 350 | 250 | 650 |
| 40 mm | 450 | 400 | 1,200 |
| 50 mm | 650 | 450 | 1,500 |
| 63 mm | 750 | 650 | 1,800 |
| 75 mm | 1,300 | 2,200 | 3,000 |
| 90 mm | 3,200 | 3,000 | 3,700 |
110 mm appears in the product options but has no fixed shop price. Consequently, ask us for a quote on that size before you plan a budget. Prices move with resin costs, so confirm the current figure when you order.
Threaded, Plain or Complete Ends
The body is the same valve in every size. What changes is how it joins your pipe, and that choice decides the fittings you need alongside it.
- Threaded – female threads at both ends. It screws onto a threaded male adapter, so you can undo it later. Use this end at tanks, pumps and filter housings, where removal is normal.
- Plain – smooth spigots for solvent welding into PVC pipe. In practice this is the cheapest permanent join. It is also the hardest to reverse, so plan the position first.
- Complete – the valve arrives with the joining pieces already fitted. For example, a complete 25 mm unit is ready to drop into a line without extra work. As a result, installation on a busy site takes minutes rather than an hour.
On HDPE pipe, neither plain nor threaded suits the joint directly. There, pair the valve with an HDPE adapter or a compression coupling, and size the adapter to the pipe, not to the valve.
Ball Cork and Ball Valve, Compared
Buyers often ask which part they need, because the two names sit side by side in our catalogue. The table below sets out the real difference.
| Point | Ball cork (this page) | Metal ball valve |
|---|---|---|
| Body | UPVC, grey | Brass or PP with metal handle |
| Sizes stocked | 20 mm to 110 mm | 25 mm to 63 mm |
| Join | Threaded, plain or complete | Male and female threads |
| Best for | Farm water, drip mains, tanks | Pump discharge, higher pressure |
| Starts at | KES 100 | KES 480 |
Plastic bodies handle farm water well and never rust. Metal bodies carry pump pressure and survive being knocked. In contrast, a plastic valve on a pulsing pump discharge can crack at the thread. So match the body to the duty, not to the price.
Where Farmers Fit These Valves
Most sales go to five positions on a farm. Each one is a point where someone must stop water to do something else.
- At the outlet of an overhead tank, so a blockage downstream can be isolated without draining the tank.
- Before a water filter, so the screen comes out for cleaning under a closed line.
- At the head of each drip zone, next to the drip tape and its connectors.
- On a spur to a trough or drinking point, where the line must be shut for cleaning.
- At the end of a mainline, beside the end plugs, so the flush routine is quick.
Two other valves earn their place in the same system. A foot valve keeps the suction line primed at the source, and an air release valve clears the air pockets that cause water hammer. Meanwhile, every isolation point you add makes the next repair smaller.
Installing and Maintaining a Ball Cork
First, dry-fit the run and confirm the flow direction. Then cut the pipe square, because an angled entry strains the joint. Next, clean and dry both spigots before solvent welding, or seat the thread by hand before the final turn. Use PTFE tape on threaded joints, and never force a plastic thread with a wrench beyond hand-tight plus a quarter turn.
After installation, open the valve fully and pressurise the line slowly. Then check the seats for weeping. Finally, exercise every valve in the system once a month, including the ones you never touch. A valve left shut for a whole dry season is the one that seizes.
Two habits extend service life. Keep grit out of the line, since sand scores the seats and causes a slow drip. Also, store spare valves out of direct sun before fitting them, because UV embrittles the handle over time. For the engineering definition of the part, see the ball valve reference.
Ball Cork: Frequently Asked Questions
What size ball cork do I need?
Match the valve to the pipe, not to the fitting beside it. Most 20 mm and 25 mm lines are the common farm sizes, while a mainline to a large block runs 40 mm or more.
Is a ball cork the same as a float valve?
No, and this confuses many buyers. A ball cork is a manual quarter-turn valve in the line. A float valve sits inside a tank and shuts the inlet automatically when the water rises.
Can I use it to control flow?
Only fully open or fully shut. Throttling forces water across the seat, so the valve wears and starts to leak.
Will a UPVC body crack in the sun?
Outdoor farm use is normal for these bodies. However, the handle is the part that goes brittle first, so shade the valve where you can and exercise it monthly.
Do you deliver outside Nairobi?
Yes. We ship countrywide, and a mixed order of valves, adapters and tape goes out in one parcel.
How do I order the right one?
Send the pipe size, the end type and the quantity. Then we confirm stock and price the same day.
